Professional Life

For the past 30 years I have been committed to helping older adults improve their health, fitness and function so that they can continue to enjoy life to the fullest for as long as possible.  My diverse experiences as a professor, researcher, global educator, award-winning fitness professional, author and gym owner have cultivated unique insights into how to do this effectively. 


As a clinical exercise physiologist and certified Lifestyle Medicine Professional, I understand how to manage and reverse numerous health conditions such as hypertension, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, joint replacements and much more through a behavioral lifestyle approach that applies the 6 Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine.


As an award-winning fitness professional, I’ve worked with a wide variety of clients from frail to fit, healthy to diseased and everything in between.  If it exists, I’ve probably dealt with it.  I’ve created and led successful fitness programs in retirement communities, senior centers, community centers, Universities and health clubs.  My innovative training model is now used by thousands of health and fitness professionals all around the world.


Over the past 3 decades, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from and be mentored by some of the world’s leaders and innovative thinkers and I want to share this expertise with you.


I’ve realized that most people don’t want to live long if they can’t live well so I’ve developed an innovative and effective yet simple 3 Step Process called the Functional Aging Formula based on the highest quality scientific evidence available.  I’ve not only used it successfully with thousands of older adults but I’ve taught these same principles to tens of thousands of health and fitness professionals all over the world.

Personal Life

I am a husband of 30+ years and father of 8 children (3 boys, 5 girls). I enjoy attending my kids' sporting events, beating them at board games and almost anything outdoors such as hiking and camping.  My Christian faith drives everything I do...from raising my awesome kids, to my business interactions, to nurturing the many foster children that have been through our home.  My favorite sports teams are the Virginia Tech Hokies and Indianapolis Colts and so many a Saturday and Sunday are spent watching games with my older boys who share my love for football.
